Our Finest Dour is a project which aims to raise awareness of the River Dour in Dover. The Dour contains rare chalk stream habitat and is home to many exciting species such as brown trout, kingfisher and grey wagtail. The provide a range of activities to support the health of the River Dour;

• River Cleans – Between April and November (when one can access the river) WCCP organises regular litter cleans for local people to help care for the river. Rubbish in the river is an ongoing issue with a significant negative environmental and visual impact on the town. 

• Riverfly Surveys – WCCP coordinates a programme of citizen science volunteer riverfly surveys, for which we provide the training and equipment etc. Survey data is fed back to the Riverfly Partnership and provides an opportunity to monitor the health of the river. It is a recognised method by the Environment Agency so can trigger further investigation.

• River Education – Run regular sessions on the river for local schools, where they get the opportunity to directly interact with the river, while learning about its global importance, special wildlife and vulnerable nature due to over abstraction.

• Community Engagement – Engage with a wide range of stakeholders about the river’s importance as a chalk stream and to Dover itself.

• Ecology – WCCP works with landowners, the Environment Agency and others to find ways to improve the ecological integrity of the river. This includes physical interventions as well as information campaigns.
